Deserts of Pakistan

KHARAN DESERT - Kharan Desert, which is counted among the most famous and largest deserts of Pakistan, lies amid the vast swathes of the barrenness of Balochistan. The desert is widely known for its extremely arid climatic conditions. Due to this fact, a large part of the Kharan Desert is inhabited as it covers an area of 20,000 square kilometres and has a population of just 0.23 million, making one of the least populated deserts on earth. Around 3000 metres of mountainous plateaus cover the north, east and west of the desert, which extends all the way into the Iranian territory. Since a large part of the desert is covered in a vast isolated plain, it was used as Pakistan’s second nuclear testing facility in the year 1988.
THAR DESERT - Straddling the border between India and Pakistan, Thar Desert, which is also known as the Great Indian Desert, is one of the largest deserts on earth. It’s a vast, arid region of rolling sandhills, which covers a quarter of a million square kilometres of the subcontinent. The vastness of the Thar desert is spread over a large part of Indian Punjab and Gujrat, as well as Sindh in Pakistan. To quote this fact in numbers, around 85% of the desert is in India while the remaining 15% is in Pakistan. Another incredible fact about Thar is that despite its harsh natural environments, the desert is inhabited by around 30 million people, making it one of the most populated, easily accessible and least inhospitable deserts in the world. Due to these factors, it is often dubbed as the “Friendly Desert”. Most of the inhabitants of this desert live in rural areas and practice both Islam and Hinduism. This brings cultural diversity to the region and people here celebrate many colourful festivals around the year. A large chunk of the population of Thar is based on nomads, who have their livelihood based on agriculture and are mostly engaged in animal husbandry. Thar is also home to some of the most amazing wildlife species in Pakistan, which have learned to survive the heat and dryness of the desert. Some of the rarest animals, as well as regional and migratory birds, can be spotted grazing on the thorny bushes and wandering around in the vastness of this desert, including Blackbuck, Chinkara, Bishnois, red fox peacock, peafowl, eagles, harriers, falcons, buzzards, kestrel and vultures, to name a few.
THAL DESERT - Located in the Jhang district of western Punjab lies another very famous desert of Pakistan known as Thal. Running 305 kilometres in length from north to south, the desert boasts some incredibly distinct natural features. For instance, it offers some of the most amazing views of sand dunes, the beauty of which is amplified by a flawless canopy of blue sky in the background. Wind Cyclones are also a common occurrence in the desert Unlike what we generally presume about a desert, Thal isn’t a barren wasteland at all. In fact, it gets covered with lush green vegetation during February and March as the local farmers use the desert land for the cultivation of hara choliyan (green chickpeas). However, as the season of harvest gets over, the roots of the crops die off, returning the desert to its actual state of naked emptiness. One of the noteworthy highlights of this desert region in Punjab is the Greater Thal Canal. This canal is a multimillion-rupee project, which was inaugurated over a decade ago for the effective distribution of water for agricultural use in the nearby rural areas of the region. Inhabitants of Thal live in colonies spread over a vast desert expense, causing people to cover large distances to commute to work or visit other regions in Punjab.
CHOLISTAN DESERT - The Cholistan Desert, which is locally known as Rohi, is one of the most famous and largest deserts of Pakistan. It’s located in the peripheries of Bahawalpur, which is one of Punjab’s most famous cities. This 16,000 square kilometres barren tract of land is largely inhabited by semi-nomadic people, who constantly keep moving from one place to another in search of food, shelter from the harsh climate conditions and fodder for the livestock. Cholistan is largely known for some of its very famous locally produced items including cotton and wool products, beautiful handwoven blankets and rugs, and different types of jewellery items made from gold and silver. Engaged in the production of a variety of handcrafted items including the very famous Cholistani Khussas, the cottage industry in the Cholistan Desert serves as the economic engine of the region. Apart from the rural settlements, the majority of nomads earn their livelihood from livestock as they breed animals to be sold, milked and shorn for their wool. Located in the southern part of Punjab, Cholistan is home to some of the most amazing wildlife species in Pakistan. The names of some unique animals and birds that need to be highlighted here include Desert wolf(rare), Red fox, Jackal, Indian mongoose, Forest cat, Caracal cat, Chinkara gazelle, Nilgai antelope, Black vulture, Blackbuck, Saker falcon, Peregrine falcon, cobra, Saw viper and Russell’s viper. Houbara bustard, which is a migratory bird, visits the region during winters. Recognised as an extremely rare bird species, it’s one of the greatest highlights of wildlife in Cholistan. The presence of Derawar fort, which is a historical structure standing with all its magnificence to date, hints towards the historical significance of the Cholistan desert. With a perfectly symmetrical architecture, the fort is a centuries-old structure located 130 kilometres south of the city of Bahawalpur in southern Punjab. In stark contrast to its arid desert landscape, the desert is home Dodhla Forest, one of Pakistan’s most well-protected rainforest. With lush green vegetation of some of the rarest plant species of the country, this oasis of Cholistan Desert is one of its most unique features.
KATPANA DESERT - The Cold Desert, also known as the Katpana Desert or Biama Nakpo, is a high-altitude desert located near Skardu, northern Gilgit-Baltistan . The desert contains expanses of large sand dunes that are sometimes covered in snow during winter. Situated at an elevation of 2,226 metres (7,303 feet) above sea level, the Katpana Desert is one of the highest deserts in the world. The desert technically stretches from the Khaplu Valley to Nubra in Ladakh, but the largest desert area is found in Skardu and Shigar Valley. The portion most visited is located near Skardu Airport.

MEMOIR ON THE THURR AND PARKUR DISTRICTS OF SIND - MEMOIR O THE THURR AD PARKUR DISTRICTS OF SID. The object of the following Memoir is—1stly, to give an idea of the physical aspect of a district but little known; 2ndly, to notice the leading tribes by which it is inhabited; 3rdly, to trace out the course of events that led to our first connection with it; 4thly, to detail the settlement made for the local Chiefs after the conquest of Sind; 5thly, to allude to the land tenure, and fixed revenue assessment lately introduced; 6thly, to offer a few remarks on the general contentment of the people of the Thurr and Parkur, census, education, public works, revenue, and disbursements for the last seven years, and gratifying prospects for the future. Consequent on the Thurr and Parkur administration having been conducted from Bhooj, together with the general want of information regarding these out-of-the-way districts, it has often been supposed that they form a portion of the hereditary States of the Kutch Principality, or have been transferred to His Highness the Rao of Kutch by the British Government. In the map of Sind prepared in the Quartermaster General’s Office, the Thurr and Parkur districts will be observed to occupy a nondescript position; while the Thurr and Parkur is only occasionally spoken of with the three other Collectorates as forming an integral part of British Sind. The information contained in this Memoir is, it is almost needless to observe, chiefly collated from the Government records, from which extracts on the different subjects noticed have been freely made; while the charge of the districts since 1847 has enabled me to visit all parts of them, and become well acquainted with all classes of the inhabitants. Desert History ( Part 02 ) - تاريخ ريگستان (ڀاڱو ٻيو) رائچند هريجن ڇپائيندڙ پاران ”تاريخ ريگستان“ ڀاڱي ٻئين جو ٽيون ڇاپو مهربان پڙهندڙن جي خدمت ۾ حاضر آهي. هن کان اڳ هن ڪتاب جو پهريون ۽ ٻيو ڇاپو 1988ع ۾ ڇپجي پڌرا ٿي چڪا آهن. هي ڪتاب ”ٿر“ جي هڪ مفصل تاريخ آهي، جنهن تي سرڳواسي رائچند هريجن ڏاڍي محنت ۽ جذبي سان ڪم ڪيو آهي. هن ڪتاب جي وڏي خوبي اها آهي ته مصنف جو تعلق خود ’ٿر‘ سان آهي. حقيقت ۾ معياري تحقيق جي تقاضا به اها آهي ته لاڳاپيل علائقي جو محقق اتان جي علائقن، شخصيتن، ٻولين ۽ قبيلن وغيره تي تحقيق ڪرڻ جي ذميواري ترجيحي طور تي کڻي، ڇو ته ٻاهرين محققن جي ڀيٽ ۾ مقامي محقق ئي آسپاس جي ماحول کي وڌيڪ گهرائيءَ ۽ چٽائيءَ سان ڄاڻي سگهن ٿا. هن ڪتاب ۾ مؤرخ جو ’ٿر‘ سان ڳانڍاپو هئڻ بلڪل سون تي سهاڳي جو ڪم ڏنو آهي. مولانا غلام محمد گرامي چواڻي ته: ”ڪتاب جي مواد ۽ ان جي ترتيب کي ڏسي مڃڻو پوي ٿو ته هيءَ علمي ۽ تاريخي ڪاوش هڪ اهڙي صاحبِ قلم جي آهي، جنهن مشاهدي جي قوت سان ’ٿر‘ جي هر پهلوءَ کي باريڪ بينيءَ سان جاچيو به آهي ۽ پرکيو به آهي.“ وڏي عرصي کان پوءِ مصنف جي انهيءَ عرق ريزيءَ کي نئين سر ڪمپيوٽر ڪمپوزنگ جي ذريعي ڪتاب جي هن ڀاڱي سميت مڪمل ڪتاب پيش ڪندي ادارو سرهائي محسوس ڪري ٿو. اُميد آهي ته ٻئي ڀاڱي جي ڇپجڻ کان پوءِ نه رڳو ٿر سان لاڳاپيل مهربان پر سمورا سنڌواسي هن شاندار تحرير جو لطف حاصل ڪري سگهندا.

MEMOIR ON THE THURR AND PARKUR DISTRICTS OF SIND - MEMOIR O THE THURR AD PARKUR DISTRICTS OF SID. The object of the following Memoir is—1stly, to give an idea of the physical aspect of a district but little known; 2ndly, to notice the leading tribes by which it is inhabited; 3rdly, to trace out the course of events that led to our first connection with it; 4thly, to detail the settlement made for the local Chiefs after the conquest of Sind; 5thly, to allude to the land tenure, and fixed revenue assessment lately introduced; 6thly, to offer a few remarks on the general contentment of the people of the Thurr and Parkur, census, education, public works, revenue, and disbursements for the last seven years, and gratifying prospects for the future. Consequent on the Thurr and Parkur administration having been conducted from Bhooj, together with the general want of information regarding these out-of-the-way districts, it has often been supposed that they form a portion of the hereditary States of the Kutch Principality, or have been transferred to His Highness the Rao of Kutch by the British Government. In the map of Sind prepared in the Quartermaster General’s Office, the Thurr and Parkur districts will be observed to occupy a nondescript position; while the Thurr and Parkur is only occasionally spoken of with the three other Collectorates as forming an integral part of British Sind. The information contained in this Memoir is, it is almost needless to observe, chiefly collated from the Government records, from which extracts on the different subjects noticed have been freely made; while the charge of the districts since 1847 has enabled me to visit all parts of them, and become well acquainted with all classes of the inhabitants. Desert History ( Part 01 ) - تاريخ ريگستان (ڀاڱو پهريون) رائچند هريجن ڇپائيندڙ پاران هيءُ ڪتاب ٿر جي تاريخ تي هڪ دستاويزي حيثيت رکي ٿو، جيڪو سرڳواسي رائچند هريجن جي اڻ مَئي محنت جو ڦلُ آهي. هن ڪتاب ۾ محقق ۽ تاريخ جي ماهر رائچند هريجن ٿر جي طبعي، جاگرافيائي ۽ معاشي حالتن کان وٺي ٿري ماڻهن جي اُٿڻي ويهڻي، رسم و رواج، تهذيب و تمدن تائين هر موضوع تي مختصر پر جامع انداز ۾ ذڪر ڪيو آهي. هيءُ ڪتاب سومرا دور کان موجودهه دور تائين ٿر جي تاريخ جو هڪ آئينو آهي، جنهن ۾ ڪو به ٿر ڄائو پنهنجي پراڻي تاريخ جو چهرو ڏسي عجب کائي سگهي ٿو. پڙهندڙ حضرات هن ڪتاب جو مطالعو ڪندي محقق جي ڪيل ڪاوش ۽ محنت کان منحرف ٿين، ائين ٿي نه ٿو سگهي. ڪٿي ڪٿي مذهبي رنگ محقق جي ذهن کي متاثر ڪيو آهي، پر اهو هڪ انساني ۽ فطري جذبو آهي، جنهن کان بچڻ ڏاڍو مشڪل هوندو آهي. سرڳواسي رائچند هريجن سان ڪِن ڳالهين تي اختلاف راءِ رکي سگهجي ٿو، پر محقق جنهن محبت، اڻ مَئي پيار ۽ جستجوءَ سان هن تاريخي رٿا کي توڙ تائين رسايو آهي، ان جذبي ۽ همٿ سان ڪوبه پڙهيل ڳڙهيل شخص اختلاف نه رکندو. ادبي بورڊ فاضل محقق جي تاريخ ۽ جاگرافيءَ جي شعبي سان انهيءَ لڳاءَ ۽ محنت جو قدر ڪري ٿو ۽ ڪتاب جو نئون ڇاپو شايع ڪندي پڙهندڙ حضرات مان سٺي موٽ جي اُميد پڻ رکي ٿو. بورڊ سنڌي ادب جي خدمت ڪرڻ سان گڏوگڏ سنڌ جي تاريخ بابت معياري ڪم ڪرڻ گهري ٿو. ادبي بورڊ جي ماضيءَ واري تاريخ به اِن ڳالهه جي ثابتي ڏئي ٿي. چچ نامو، تحفته الڪرام، جنت السنڌ وغيره سنڌ جي تارخ تي، بورڊ جا ڇپايل بي مثال ڪتاب آهن. موضوع جي مناسبت سان اهڙي نوعيت جا ڪتاب بورڊ جي شروعاتي دور کان پوءِ نه اچي سگهيا آهن، جڏهن، ته اها سنڌ به موجود آهي ۽ ان جا وارث به سلامت آهن! ان جا ڪافي سبب آهن: ڪن ماڻهن جو خيال آهي، ته ان دور کان پوءِ سنڌ قحط الرجال واري دور مان گذري رهي آهي، جنهن ڪري سنڌ جي تاريخ تي ڪم نه ٿي سگهيو آهي. هاڻوڪي دور تي الزام آهن، ته هي دور پنهنجي سفر ۾ علي ڪوفي، مير علي شير قانع، رحيمداد خان مولائي، شيدائي، خداداد خان، عمر بن محمد دائود پوٽي، علامه آءِ آءِ قاضي، مرزا قليچ بيگ، پير علي محمد راشدي، پير حسام الدين راشدي ۽ غلام محمد گراميءَ جهڙيون علمي، ادبي ۽ تاريخي طرح قدآور شخصيتون پئدا ڪري نه سگهيو آهي. ان ڳالهه کي ڪنهن حد تائين مڃيندي چئي سگهجي ٿو، ته معتبر ليکڪن جي اڻاٺ هوندي به ان وٽ اهڙا قلمڪار پڻ موجود آهن، جيڪي جذبي ۽ پيار سان سنڌ جي تاريخ ۽ علم و ادب تي ان کان به وڌيڪ ڪم ڪرڻ جي صلاحيت رکن ٿا. پر کين اڃا اهڙو ماحول فراهم ڪري نه ڏنو ويو آهي. بورڊ مستقبل ۾ سنڌ جي تاريخ تي سائنسي ۽ جديد انداز ۾ نئين سر ڪم ڪرڻ جو نيڪ ارادو رکي ٿو. تحقيق جي فن ۽ علم کي اڄ جي جديد ۽ سائنسي تقاضائن سان سلهاڙي سنڌ جي جديد تاريخ تي ڪم ڪري سگهجي ٿو. اهو هاڻي اڄ جي سائنسي ۽ ٽيڪنالاجيءَ واري دور ۾ ايڏو ڏکيو ڪم نه رهيو آهي، جيڪو ڪم اڳ ڏينهن هفتن، مهينن ۽ سالن ۾ ڪري سگهبو هو، اهو اڄ گهڙين ۾ ٿي وڃي ٿو. انٽرنيٽ ساري دنيا کي پاڻ ۾ ملائي هڪ پاڙو بڻائي ڇڏيو آهي. تاريخ سان دلچسپي رکندڙ ماڻهن کي هيءَ سوکڙي آڇيندي خوشي محسوس ڪريون ٿا.
Desert History ( Part 02 ) - تاريخ ريگستان (ڀاڱو ٻيو) رائچند هريجن ڇپائيندڙ پاران ”تاريخ ريگستان“ ڀاڱي ٻئين جو ٽيون ڇاپو مهربان پڙهندڙن جي خدمت ۾ حاضر آهي. هن کان اڳ هن ڪتاب جو پهريون ۽ ٻيو ڇاپو 1988ع ۾ ڇپجي پڌرا ٿي چڪا آهن. هي ڪتاب ”ٿر“ جي هڪ مفصل تاريخ آهي، جنهن تي سرڳواسي رائچند هريجن ڏاڍي محنت ۽ جذبي سان ڪم ڪيو آهي. هن ڪتاب جي وڏي خوبي اها آهي ته مصنف جو تعلق خود ’ٿر‘ سان آهي. حقيقت ۾ معياري تحقيق جي تقاضا به اها آهي ته لاڳاپيل علائقي جو محقق اتان جي علائقن، شخصيتن، ٻولين ۽ قبيلن وغيره تي تحقيق ڪرڻ جي ذميواري ترجيحي طور تي کڻي، ڇو ته ٻاهرين محققن جي ڀيٽ ۾ مقامي محقق ئي آسپاس جي ماحول کي وڌيڪ گهرائيءَ ۽ چٽائيءَ سان ڄاڻي سگهن ٿا. هن ڪتاب ۾ مؤرخ جو ’ٿر‘ سان ڳانڍاپو هئڻ بلڪل سون تي سهاڳي جو ڪم ڏنو آهي. مولانا غلام محمد گرامي چواڻي ته: ”ڪتاب جي مواد ۽ ان جي ترتيب کي ڏسي مڃڻو پوي ٿو ته هيءَ علمي ۽ تاريخي ڪاوش هڪ اهڙي صاحبِ قلم جي آهي، جنهن مشاهدي جي قوت سان ’ٿر‘ جي هر پهلوءَ کي باريڪ بينيءَ سان جاچيو به آهي ۽ پرکيو به آهي.“ وڏي عرصي کان پوءِ مصنف جي انهيءَ عرق ريزيءَ کي نئين سر ڪمپيوٽر ڪمپوزنگ جي ذريعي ڪتاب جي هن ڀاڱي سميت مڪمل ڪتاب پيش ڪندي ادارو سرهائي محسوس ڪري ٿو. اُميد آهي ته ٻئي ڀاڱي جي ڇپجڻ کان پوءِ نه رڳو ٿر سان لاڳاپيل مهربان پر سمورا سنڌواسي هن شاندار تحرير جو لطف حاصل ڪري سگهندا.
